Statement of Financial Activities
The 2021 balance sheet showed a surplus of 529k. This result was largely generated by a reversal of provisions for unrealized losses on financial investments recorded in previous years. It should be noted that the operating budget was slightly up in 2021. Deloitte & Touche, IHES s statutory auditor, carried out an audit of the accounts and the specific audits required by law. It certified that the financial statements presented for 2021 were consistent and fair in accordance with French accounting rules and principles and gave a true and fair view of the results of operations for the past financial year.
INCOME The Institute's sources of funding are diverse public and private, national and international and they serve to fund the Institute's growing scientific activities over the long term.
In 2021, resources were up from the previous year. The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation increased its grant, which remains the main source of funding for IHES, covering nearly 33% of its operating budget. This support testifies to the key role IHES plays in the national and international influence of French research.
In a competitive national and international context, there were fewer research contracts and agreements, due to the end of the ERC QuASIFT contract on August 31, 2021. Other international contracts, such as the ERC and Simons Foundation programs, remained active, showing the vitality of the Institute s scientific activities. Public research agreements and contracts (Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, CEA) as well as funding obtained from French and foreign institutions (Max-Planck-Gessellschaft, FNS, BLSPO) also confirmed the excellence and quality of the work carried out by the Institute for the national and international scientific communities.
IHES continued to pursue an active policy of income development. In 2021, the Institute received 2,970k from individuals, companies and foundations. In order to reinforce the Institute's financial base and ensure its long-term robustness and independence, a large proportion of the donations received were used to consolidate endowment funds.
Financial income from endowment funds represented 13% of the Institute's ressources. IHES continued to maintain a prudent investment policy on the markets while following the objectives set by the Board of Directors. This policy enabled a large part of the latent capital losses to be recovered and financial income to be generated, in accordance with the budget.
Accommodation revenues increased, due to a change in the status of postdoctoral fellows in the new scientific programs, allowing them to pay a modest rent.
Revenues from the Publications mathématiques de l IHES decreased compared to 2020. In 2021, this leading scientific journal published two new issues, numbers 133 and 134.
