A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
In 2021, with the health situation still fluctuating, scientific activity at IHES remained buoyant, both remotely and in person.First of all, in September, we had the pleasure to welcome Laure Saint- Raymond, who joined us as permanent professor. A mathematician known throughout the world for her work on partial differential equations and their application to fluid dynamics, she is opening up a new area of research at the Institute.
Laurent Lafforgue, a mathematician and IHES permanent professor since 2000, Fields medalist in 2002, decided to give a new turn to his career and left the Institute in September 2021.
In October, at a conference marking Thibault Damour s seventieth birthday, we paid tribute to his exceptional career. A permanent professor since 1989, he was awarded no fewer than three prizes in 2021: the Galileo Galilei Medal, the Dirac Medal and the Balzan Prize.
A number of other events, often held in a hybrid format, took place throughout the year. It was possible to organize several conferences, including Algebraic geometry in honor of Luc Illusie , held in June. The Summer School, Enumerative Geometry, Physics and Representation Theory was highly successful and we were once again able to welcome a freshers event for PhD students from the Hadamard doctoral school.
With the arrival of the first woman to join IHES as permanent professor, we took the opportunity to think through the next steps in the journey towards increasing the number of women, in science fields, including at IHES, where only 10% of invited researchers are women. With the support of expert specialists and organizations in this field, we organized several events to raise awareness of these issues and to promote women in basic research. We feel it essential to develop this sort of action, to reinforce diversity and inclusion in mathematics and science in general.
I also wanted to highlight the achievement of two milestones this year. Since January 1st, 2021, the Publications mathématiques de l IHES has become a diamond open access journal, offering the scientific community the benefits of full access to the final version of articles, right from their publication. In December, we officially launched Carmin.tv, an audiovisual broadcasting platform for mathematics and its interactions with other scientific disciplines. The platform was created in partnership with CIMPA, CIRM (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Université/Société mathématique de France), and IHP (CNRS/Sorbonne Université). This represents an important achievement in promoting open science and facilitating access to the greatest number.
