IHES IN A NUTSHELL

When he founded IHES, Léon Motchane s ambition was to support researchers pushing back the boundaries of knowledge, by welcoming them to a place suitable to the fulfilment of their research.The Institute is dedicated to mathematics, theoretical physics and to sciences at the interface of those disciplines. Since 1958, it has been promoting free and disinterested research. Numerous scientific successes rewarded this strategy, including the seven Fields medal and the three Abel prize awarded to its permanent professors.

Academic freedom, interaction with their peers, scientific secretariat, housing, everything is organized at the Institute to enable permanent professors as well as invited researchers to pursue their research in the best possible conditions.

This report highlights the researchers decisive contributions, recalls the impressive scientific activity that took place in 2021, and underlines the attention brought to the sound management of this Institute.

IHES is a place of knowledge and transmission at the service of the scientific community, which continues to exist thanks to the support of the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, of research institutions worldwide and of its generous donors.
